Height from BMI and Weight Formula Explained

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters squared

Height in meters = √(weight in kilograms / BMI)

The parentheses matter: first divide weight by BMI, then take the square root of the entire quotient.

Step-by-Step Height Calculation Examples

Example with 72 kg and BMI 22.5

Height = √(72 / 22.5) = √3.2 = 1.7889 m, or about 178.9 cm.

Example with 50 kg and BMI 20

Height = √(50 / 20) = √2.5 = 1.5811 m, or about 158.1 cm.

Calculating Height Using Metric and Imperial Units

For pounds, first use kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237, then apply the metric formula. The common imperial BMI equation uses 703, giving height in inches = √((weight in pounds × 703) / BMI). Because 703 is a conventional rounded factor, converting pounds to kilograms is preferable when matching this calculator. If needed, multiply an inch result by 2.54 to express it in centimeters.

How BMI, Weight, and Height Are Connected

BMI is constructed from weight relative to squared height. If two of the three values are known consistently, algebra can recover the third. This relationship does not explain body composition, growth, or health; it only connects the numerical measurements in the BMI equation.

Accuracy and Limitations of BMI-Based Height Results

The rearrangement is mathematically valid, but the output is only as accurate as the BMI and weight entered. A BMI rounded to one decimal place can only reproduce an approximate height, and self-reported weight may add more error.
